The Hum of Generators

Well if anyone is missing me it is not that I don't have anything to say! I am one of the 80% of West Virginia without power. On Friday, my outside thermometer read a 105 degrees so a thunderstorm was welcomed, my thinking it would push out the hot air and cool everything off. Instead it roared down the back of my hill and blew everything in it's path out into my yard, knocked over the 8 foot basketball hoop causing chaos. Breaking branches from the large trees behind my house and depositing them in the field next door. In the house, the lights flickered several times before it left us in the dark. From what we heard on the news it blew it's way right through to Washington, D.C. leaving most everyone without power.

Central air is a wonderful thing until you don't have it anymore. Windows that are normally closed are opened wide, in a heat wave it is like swimming in hot soup. Fans that have spent years in the garage are drug out to be put in service. And if you are lucky, you have a smart husband, who bought a big generator, instead of fabric, for a day just like this one. Boy, am I a happy girl today.

Tripping over "pigtails" and extension cords running through the middle of my house. Kinda hard to sweep the floor. I guess I will mop when the power comes back on.

Saturday night was the worst for me, my little man was so hot he couldn't sleep. My husband had turned the generator off for the night. When I checked the thermometer outside was 78, and inside was 89 degrees. I was ready to go to a hotel. I found this little battery operated fan with a light for the bathroom but it ended up in David's bed! Find them at Riteaid! Good thing to have when the powers out!

It is now Monday, I was just standing in the kitchen trying to figure out how I would get my post up for the Red, White and Blue Blog Hop on July 6th and the fan came on above my head. Hurrah, woot, woot! I have power again! All of you still without power, I am praying for you to get it soon. Thank you AEP Power!.

Just to confirm to the world, my husband is awesome! During this time he has cut trees for family, friends, and the local cemetery. Fixed one generator twice for a widow down the road. Keep our home cool as best as possible, (not one bit of food lost from our refrigerator or freezer) hurrah! He even cooked an beautiful dinner out on the grill. Thank you my love for thinking ahead! I love you so much!

Boy, I missed technology! I gotta get to sewing! So happy to be back! Lisa

  2. We were right there with you, there were 120,000 without power and now it's "only" 53,000 in our area...thankfully ours was restored last night. Glad yours has been too. Will continue to pray for those still without as the temps stay in the upper 90's all week. What a crazy storm...never thought I'd see 90 mph "hurricane winds" in Indiana.

  5. I have missed you! I am glad you came through the storm and heat ok. Last night when I was praying with my son, we were very thankful for our central air. We set a high temp record yesterday - the old one was from 1911. I slept on a mattress on the LR floor since there is only one vent upstairs where my room is. :)

  9. Hi ~ I popped over to your blog for the first time...saw the link about the giveaway. I'm enjoying my visit here.

I can so identify with this post! We're in VA, and at our house only lost power for 16 hours...but no sleep that first hot night (no generator here). Friends of ours JUST got their power back! My husband works for VAPower and is still at work, hoping to be finished by Monday 9th. We missed the 4th of July having him here, my birthday this past Monday, and the whole weekend. A home just isn't the same without the dad! We'll definitely be glad when things are back to normal.

  10. Today makes one week sence the storm hit. There are still almost 200,000 without power, and a storm yesterday caused some people who had there power restored to be lost again. Investing in a generator is a great investment for anyone. The money spent on the generator was recovered by the food cost we would have lost in our fridge and freezer. Always be prepaired!! My heart goes out to the people who still have no power as today and tommorow the temp is going to be over 100. People on the news are crying for help, but first you must help yourselves, our government is in despare(in my opion) and relief orginations can only do so much!!

  11. Glad you got you power back, We had a similar incident in October, a snow storm came through and because the leaves were still on the trees, it caused a lot of damage resulting in power loss for a week! We were lucky, it was fall and the nights were cold but the days were warm. You suffered through some horrendous heat! I don't take my electricity for grant it now.
