Honor

"Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age.
It does so because honor is, finally,
about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending,
even it it comes at a high cost.
In our time, that may mean social disapproval,
public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, death itself.
The question remains:
What is worth defending?
What is worth dying for?
What is worth living for?"
~ William J. Bennett in a lecture to the US Naval Academy, 11/24/97 ~

I borrowed this quote from
Thistle Cove Farm Sandra has some very interesting news to read. Maybe, if we are all more informed things can change. Just a thought!

Shake Your Pom Poms & GIVEAWAY

This Giveaway is now closed!

I want to take moment to thank Madam Samm @ Sew We Quilt and Theatrica@ Pig Tales and Quilts the greatest cheerleaders around! I love a challenge and Madam Samm just keeps thinking them up! Thank you ladies for arranging another terrific hop!

Welcome to "In The Boon Docks"! I am Lisa and this is my place in the middle of the woods on the side of hill! Today we are talking pom poms if you have been following the blog hop you have seen quite a few ways to use them! One thing I have observed about creative people is they like to sew, knit, crochet, and many other crafts. Pom poms can be used with many crafts to decorate and accessorize.

These are a few hats I made during the winter for baby gifts. The pom poms were made using Clover Large Pom Pom Maker for a finished 2 1/2" pom pom.

I made this hat for the Shake Your Pom Poms Blog Hop and myself! Love the colors in this yarn. I make hats using Knifty Knitter! I used the Jumbo Pom Pom Maker for a finished pom pom of 4 1/2".

I make lots of pom poms throughout the year because a hat is not finished until it has one. Most of the hats I make are for children who love the fuzzy on top. I have used many methods to make the pom poms and in my opinion Clover's Pom Pom Makers are easy to use, durable, and not expensive.

I would like to introduce you to my friend Bob! He had to help me out with modeling while my little guy was at school! Bob has a new friend I made with another pom pom. This guy was made with the Clover Ex-Large Pom Pom Maker and some very fuzzy yarn!

His name is "Gilbert Giveaway"! He is the newest member of our family here "In The Boon Docks"! He can spot a giveaway from a mile away!

Please stop by the other blogs in "Shake Your Pom Poms" today!

Whats It Look Like? Sponsor

Thank you each one of you who voted for "Sweet Aubree", it means a lot to me!

Hello Everyone Happy Monday! In case your wondering what is "Whats It Look Like?" here is the first post What It Looks Like?. I have changed the name! Thank you Kim Jolly for your support! The Fat Quarter Shop will sponsor giveaway each month of (2) Moda Mini Charm Packs. A mini charm pack is a 2.5" x 2.5" precut with at least one of an entire Moda line for a total of around 42 pieces.

Each month, I purchase as a member of Fat Quarter Shop's Moda Mini Charm Pack Club (4) Mini Charm Packs. I will then photograph the lines in all the color-ways so you can determine which you prefer. Also available will be completed projects showing you how useful it is to have these precuts in your stash. In addition, I would love to feature your projects using 2.5" x 2.5" cotton squares. Just leave me a comment to contact you or email me through google.

The Fat Quarter Shop was founded in 2003 by Kimberly Jolly. An avid quilter, Kimberly began her shop as a side business while still working a corporate position, cutting, packing and shipping right out of her house during evenings and weekends. From the very beginning, she was committed to delivering top-notch service for every single order and customer. As the Fat Quarter Shop's reputation grew, Kimberly decided to make it a full-time operation. Her husband Kevin joined her not long after, and with his help, lots of hard work, and a tireless commitment, the store began to grow. Over the past few years a few more people have joined the staff!

If you are going to purchase something from the Fat Quarter Shop, I would be honored if you use the button on the right. I get paid nothing if you do but it does help provide continued support of the "Whats It Look like?" giveaways!

I am so excited Kimberly has agreed to help get the ball rolling, so to speak. The official start will be in May 2013. Thank you for stopping by! Create and be unique, Lisa

Sweet Aubree

Aubree is due to be born around May 10, 2013. Exciting time in her family's life! She will round out a family of four, with a big brother. Her big brother's birthday is also in May and is looking forward to his special birthday present "Aubree". I know she will be a "Cherish Child", and I am ready for her delivery. Her folks are kind and generous people. This is my first quilt finish in 2013, and I made "Sweet Aubree" for her from picking out fabric, sewing, quilting, binding to hand stitching her name on the side.

I sewed (16) 10 1/2" Squares in rows of four and then sewed the rows together. Very simple but also very pretty depending on the fabrics chosen. It is an excellent way to display fabrics you love! On the back three rectangles sewn together. This is a perfect beginners quilt! Great baby quilt!

Quilt Stats: 40" X 40"
Top Fabric: Aunt Grace FQ Bundle about 3 years old From LQS
Backing Fabric: Morningstar by Linda Hohag,
Brandywine Design, P & B Textiles
Hand Stitching: DMC Cotton Perle, 8, Blanc

My inspiration for this quilt was these lovely 30's Playtime fabrics sent from Patricia @ A Yankee In Queen Liz's Court from the Quilting Gallery's Blog Hop as a winning along with some Aurifil thread. I love to use Aurifil too, not just give it away! Thank you Patricia for a lovely giveaway and being such an inspiration. My bloggy friends you should take a look at her blog, she is talented, funny, and loves to do blog hop's!

Speaking of Aurifil thread the giveaway for " April Showers Blog Hop is open until Midnight April 18, 2013. Sign up

Le Challenge - Geometrics

Lucy & Nat have me really intrigued over their new blog Le Challenge. The first challenge is Geometrics! I cannot wait to see what everyone has created. But first I suppose I should tell you what I made.

Two potholders that are square and have rectangle piecing. Made these for my own kitchen to brighten it up.

My second entries are Oval and quite fun to make you can find the link for Easter Egg Potholders, the tutorial and pattern HERE about halfway in the post.

I had fun thinking up items that would fit with the challenge and still be what I needed to get completed. I will be back next month ladies! Cannot wait to see what Lucy & Nat come up with next. Thank you for stopping by "In The Boon Docks" and please stop in again. Create and be unique, Lisa

I have a giveaway going with Aurifil Thread and a few other goodies, if you haven't entered please do!

What is going

Hi everyone, let me tell you about my wonderful week with toilets that didn't want to flush. Can you imagine no showers for 2 days, then only 5 minutes for the last 4 days. It takes that long to get the water right when your fixing it for a kid. Cannot wash clothes or use your dishwasher. Then you can use your dishwasher but water starts backing up in it and then a circuit on the board burns out. Slipped on a towel and twisted my back and that but me out for a few days. Just not the best week. All my vacation money just went down the drain literally! Sometimes I wish I never left the city.

Ugh! My yard!

It has a pump with it's own alarm system! For a septic system!

Sometimes things happen in our lives that we think "I can't handle one more thing". Most everything were things that could be fixed and just annoyed me. My family are all healthy, I twisted my back, it happens, a few colds, but nothing serious! Thank you God! We will go on vacation next year but our sewer problems are over! Some families deal with a lot more than we did this week! Please kiss your babies and thank God you only have the little problems in life. Sorry, had to vent, feel guilty, and be thankful.

I am working on a baby quilt for a shower tomorrow afternoon. New life is so wonderful! That is really what pulled me out of my funk over this last week! I am just grateful to be here and have it happen. I hope you have a glorious weekend! I will leave you with Zoey's Easter Blanket!

Please take a minute to enter the giveaway! The April Showers Blog Hop Giveaway is still open! Create and be unique, Lisa

Covert Robin

If you are looking for the April Showers Blog Hop Giveaway it is HERE

When Rachael@ imagine gnats posted about Covert Robin signups. I just could not help myself, I had to try it! I am so happy I did. Thank you Rachael and all the others who put this great swap together.

Theresa Seykora @ Around The Home Adventures was my Covert Robin and I still cannot believe the amazing gifts. I have tried to look at her online presence but she has no blog I can find. So I will say this here! She is wonderful, thoughtful and very talented. I feel very honored to be on the receiving end. I look at the items and instantly "Happy". Thank you Theresa! I have already used my new library bag and everyone here loved your GS cookies. I should have hid those!

If you know my crazy household, you know my refrigerator is covered in school calendars, photographs, and art created by my children from over the last 27 years. I always need magnets (how did she find that out)? They match her other gifts - that happy fabric with the tiny little flowers. They are awesome! Of course the magnets were put into use out of the box.

I love this beautiful pincushion! Theresa could not have made me a more fitting item!

I really enjoyed reading all of my send partner Patty @ Lemon Lane Cottage blog posts. She is such a talented artist! While I was trying to get clues, I fell in love with all the beautiful things she creates. Patty also has the most amazing flower garden. But I could not send her flowers, they would be dead by the time they arrived. Paint a flower pot? No, it would get broke in the mail! What to do? Go to Pinterest and see what she pins. I found lots of things there (she is also a great pinner)! I decided on a large makeup pouch and Easter egg potholders that she had pinned. Learning about Patty was a great adventure and I really enjoyed it. The making part was really nerve racking especially since she is a real artist. She sent an email that she liked her gifts and the potholders were already in her kitchen. I jumped for joy, what a relief.

Large Pouch:
Fabrics: Outside: Pattern 16070, oh deer! By MoMo, Moda. Inside: Another Iota, Robert Kaufman

I chose the outside fabrics because they remind me of where I live. The colors are happy and cheerful. I hand-stitched around the top with a red cotton Perle. And made a zipper pull with a tree pendant.

Post Office Rates

The robin eggs never made it past the post office! When I went to mail my pretty package the Postmaster told me it would cost $11.80 due to increase in weight rates, he recommended repackaging it into the postal service box at $5.60, a $6.20 difference. He helped me get everything packed and sealed up again but the robin eggs didn't fit! For his helpfulness and cost saving idea I gave them to the Postmaster. I surrender from now on I will be using the USPS boxes and bags to mail within the United States.

The Easter Egg Pot Holders - Patty had pinned these on Pinterest

Tutorial & Pattern: Miss Mary Sewing Classes just follow the Pin

Fabric: Choe's Closet 30s Playtime by Moda, won from Red Pepper Quilts last year on my birthday. The prints looked just perfect for Patty.

The Covert Robin was one of the best swaps I have ever done! I would do it again next week if they had it. So I am in for next year. Inspiration and ideas galore are available at the Imagine Gnats link up! Create and be unique,Lisa

April Showers Blog Hop

Thanks you Madame Samm Sew We Quilt! and Erin Sew At Home Mummy for being the best cheerleaders in the world. Madame Samm I love how you keep thinking up great hops! You keep us challenged, that is for sure!

I love "Stitching On Prints" it is so fun! I tried out DMC Cotton Perle, Aurifil, and a pack of cheap stuff with great colors. The Cotton Perle is inexpensive and works pretty well. The cheap stuff is awful it is hard to pull through the fabric and I will not buy again. The Aurifil is just right. I hope to get more and start "Stitching On Print" a series. Where we work together once a week and learn stitches. I love the effect in the mug rug.

Bird Seed Wreath

Friday night I needed something fun for David and my niece to do in the evening. I found this Birdseed Wreath tutorial weeks ago and we had everything on hand. They combined all the ingredients except I couldn't figure out Knox gelatin. My cousin's wife clued me in that Fruit Pectin and Knox Gelatin are one and the same. Since I make Jams and jellies every year I always have a few boxes in the cabinet.

The best part is watching them mix it up because it is really STICKY!

Spray your bundt pan really well with nonstick spray (Pam)!

POPs right out!

DH just used the leftover binding scrap from the Halloween quilt and it turns out great see!

The kids had a great time making this project and the birds will eat it. But don't hang it on your porch - birds tend to be a bit messy and leave presents! Great springtime activity! We highly recommend it!
Hope you all had a wonderful Easter! Create and be unique, Lisa
