Old Glory Farm Girl Vintage/Giveaway

Hi my name is Lisa and I am so happy to have been invited to participate in the Sew Along through the Fat Quarter Shop. Lori Holt of Bee In My Bonnet is such a talented author, pattern and fabric designer. I love her books and fabric lines with Riley Blake.

Have you been following along with Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage and jumped on the #farmgirlfridays bandwagon? I love seeing the blocks each week on Instagram. The book has a great variety of patterns that are very easy to follow. It is designed to open and lay flat. The photography is so colorful and beautiful. Did I say cute, so very cute! A keeper my friends! Buy yourself a copy at the Fat Quarter Shop!

Old Glory Block

Living with two guys, my husband and grandson their hangout space is the livingroom. When I told them I was redoing the couch pillows they both told me they wanted to choose the fabrics. No girly fabric for them. The pattern for "Old Glory" has a scrappy look but that didn't get the go ahead with them. Finally we agreed upon the blue and white dot print by Riley Blake and a white center star. The rest of the fabrics are stash. I used Aurifil 50wt. thread for piecing and quilted one pillow front and both backs with Aurifil 40wt. White thread after quilting one in 50wt. Red, I decided I prefered the heavier weight for quilting. As you can see from the picture above they both look the same.

Here you can see the difference! I like when the quilting stands out. But the guys like them both and that is all that really counts. Please the ones you love! So, no pick, pick, pick, this time! (I love my seam ripper)

I have really enjoyed making blocks from Farm Girl Vintage and hope to complete the quilt when things slow down around here. I wanted to have a nice giveaway for all of you who stopped by so I bought some of Lori's new fabric, Modern Minis, and spilt it with you. I even cut the 5" squares and FQ. The panel is my favorite!

Sewing Service Alert

Hi friends sometimes I just like to reach out to you and share great products, deals, and a few tips!
Machine Maintenance
Be kind to your sewing machine, change the needle after big projects and clean it out often. If you see dust on the outside I can guarentee it is on the inside. If you don't know how to clean your machine - google your machine name, model, cleaning, and someone will show you on a blog or YouTube video. I use a paintbrush to get those dust bunnies out.
Products
Yesterday, at my local Walmart I found these Clover Jumbo Wonder Clips on sale for $13.00 for the 24 pack in the Sewing Clearance Section. I bought both bags of course. Today, I looked at Walmart.com and they are on sale for $17.29. So check your local Walmart in the Clearance and get a good deal. I love this size clip for holding fabric pieces together and they are handy for rolling up a quilt during quilting as shown below.

Let's face it we all need light and some of them can be quite expensive! I have tried and thrown away 4 or 5 because lets face it $50.00 for a little light to hang on my sewing machine is just to much! I found this one again at my local Walmart for $9.95 and it works really well. It is easy to attach and the bracket - comes with it's own sticky attachment sheet, precut. So if you need more light Dritz Flexible LED Light might suit your needs like it has mine.

Here you can see the new light is attached to the back of my Juki because I need to use the front side. The new Clover Jumbo Wonder clips holding my rolled fabric during quilting.

I shop all over and this is not as a advertisment for Walmart and yes it is possible to find these items at JoAnn's and use a 40% off coupon. But as of today Clover Jumbo Wonder Clips are $24.99 and Dritz Flexible Led Light is $16.99. So today, Walmart wins the pricing war on these products at least.

Tips

I wanted to share about quilted envelope pillows!

When your quilting the parts of the pillow do you use a backing fabric? I found on one pillow cover I made that after I washed it a few times the batting was leaving fuzzies on my pillow.

Now I use a cheap inexpensive on sale, light colored fabric to quilt them. When I remove one no fuzzies. The pillow cover last longer and you don't end up with batting dust in your sewing machine while making one. Go even cheaper and use an old cotton sheet.

I like spray basting a quilt sandwich. No I am not talking about a large quilt. Pillow covers and mini quilts are what I have sandwiched lately and I have been using this 505 Spray and Fix. It works wonderfully and it doesn't get adhesive on my sewing machine needle.

Hopefully you have gotten this far and found something useful in this post! Thank you for reading! Create and be unique - Lisa

Testing Blogsy

Testing out Blogsy

How do these photographs look to you! Blog Press can't publish two pictures the same without blowing one out of proportion!

How do you tag? I haven't been able to add a tag since May. Maybe I can in Blogsy! I don't know but if I can't I won't keep this one either!

Quilting with Aurifil

For years I have quilted my small quilts with Aurifil 50 weight thread. It just seemed so easy to use the same weight for everything. Then I was making a secret project that I wanted the quilting to make a statement and felt like I failed.

Example 1: Quilted with 50 weight

While on vacation I picked up a spool of Aurifil 40 weight to try for quilting and I really noticed a difference using the thicker thread.

Example 2: Quilted with 40 weight

In example 1 - the quilting looks kind of flat and in example 2 - I think the quilting is more defined and stands out!

For me it will be Aurifil 50wt for piecing and Aurifil 40wt for quilting!

Tell me do you see the difference?

A whole new collection of Aurifil colors! I can never get enough Aurifil! I think I will be more satisfied with my quilting from now on.

What a difference a heavier weight thread can make!

I am going to end the Vacation Giveaway on Tuesday. Please enter if you haven't already!

Thank you for being you! I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Bag Hardware

Where do you find all those little metal pieces for a new bag?

One of the things I love about thrift stores is recycling bag hardware! Unfortunately, where I live they aren't many so when we travel I watch for them everywhere. In Virginia Beach they have lots of thrift stores and I went to 4 looking for handbags that had hardware I needed for totes and handbags! I never paid more than $4.00 and got quite a few great items. Recycle, recycle, recycle! As you can see I was looking for leather handles and straps. I bought a few leather belts at $2.00 to use as straps. I got the idea for recycling leather belts from Anna of Noodlehead

A belt like this one will make (2) key fobs - at $.25

These green handles came off a new $32 purse I paid $4 at the Goodwill! Use a pair of Utility Scissors to cut the purses apart! Do not use your sewing scissors!

The clip type hardware runs about $3 a piece at JoAnn's so $4 saves you money and gives you a nice leather strap!

Metal zippers are always a favorite of mine especially with nice zipper pulls. I cut these out because I forgot a seam ripper, use a nice sharp one. Just flip over the zipper and remove the seam from the back.

Don't forget to enter the Vacation Giveaway I love this beautiful book and stationary!
