Farmer's Wife 1930s Em 30

Hello and welcome to "In The Boon Docks", my home in blogland, as an Official Blogger for the Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Sew Along! This weeks block is #30 Em. Angie's tutorial of Gnome Angel Em is Block 30 of Farmer's Wife 1930's Sampler Quilt - GnomeAngel. Without Angie there would be no sew along, she is an expert organizer besides her other career success'! I have to admit I love this block and hate it. I picked out a few seams putting it together. I used the Foundation Paper Pieced (FPP) method to piece the block with its many little tiny squares and half square triangles. Lining up everything at the end proved to be a bit difficult for me but I won the battle in the end and I am quite pleased with my block.

A few tips that may help you with this block.

First, recently I found using a 11 needle in the machine helpful when sewing FPP blocks with a stitch length of 1.6. Next, it makes it much easier to sew the FPP pieces together if the fabric is small enough to handle and big enough to do your HSTs. Mine were about 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" after checking that your pieces are large enough cut multiple ones at a time. Cut one strip at a time and then cut them up to your correct size. Keeps down on the waste of fabric.

After you sew your sections together fold the seam papers over if you have stitches above the seam line (above) carefully use your seam ripper to cut them (below). Then remove the seam line paper. This will reduce the bulk.

I sewed my pieces into two sections to attach in the center after ironing. As you can see the section is wanting to roll before it is ironed.

Use your long tweezers to hold open the seam as you iron. This keeps you from burning your fingers. Yes, I need a new ironing mat! Iron your seams open. This will help the bulk and lay flat.

Quilt Qwazy Queens Giveaway

Welcome to the Quilt Qwazy Queens blog Hop! My friends and I, with the great organization skills of Marian Seams To Be Sew are celebrating International Quilt Day by participating in this blog hop! You can win great prizes by simply visiting the blogs and leaving a comment! Then do the Rafflecopter!

Marian told me I could write about anything.

I am Lisa and I quilt and do a bunch of other crafty things in a rural area in West Virginia. I learned to sew after an accident left me disabled and unemployed. Having worked since I was 14 years old doing nothing was not an option. I could not work or drive but I needed something in my life to do. I have physical and mental issue to deal with during this time. A woman, the owner, with a lot of patience at a local quilt store took the time and a lot of effort to teach me the basics of how to use a sewing machine and quilt. Without Michelle and her staff at WV Quilt: Barboursville WV, I would never have learned. I am so grateful to them it brings me to tears thinking of how they changed my life and helped me find friends and purpose. Without their determination so many possibilities and opportunities would not have opened up in my life including I would not be a blogger today. The term "read twice cut once" was mottoed after me. I really believe that is the best advice I could give to anyone in quilting or sewing.

I shared this story and ask you to help that person who seems hopeless! You could change a life. When I started sewing at the store we unplugged the footpetal and I sewed by pushing the button. Yes it was that bad. It greatly helped in my recovery and accepting my limitations.

A wonderful way to fill your home with love is with quilts.

Mini Quilts make a beautiful display on walls.

Each blog for today has a different giveaway to enter! Please stop by each one and enter! I am running a Rafflecopter giveaway for the first time! So I hope it works, another learning curve!

Whats Up

All In A Row Quilt Along

For February's goal for OMG, I wanted to complete a row and enter #allinarowquiltalong on Facebook and I got it done but I didn't link up with everything going on around the house. Missed the linkup! I will do better! You can see here where I was working on it on Valentines day In The Boon Docks: VAL 2016 if you want. So for the record February's Goal was met! You have until March 15 to submit rows into the Facebook Group! I am going to try and get another row done before the deadline.

On The Mend

It was fantastic dealing with "Pink Eye" on my not so delighted 10 year old. But who doesn't hate Augmenten (Yuck) twice a day, and having someone put drops in your eyes 4 times a day. Then I caught a cold on top of it all and the weather has changed again. Meaning it is cold as ol' billy hell outside, my Grandma always used to say that. I haven't had time to do anything but wash a million washcloths and disinfect everything in my house! Alright, I am done complaining. My guy is all well and was happy to go back to school. It got warm again.

Then I got sicker and couldn't hardly get out of bed and hubby called my Doctor who saw me Monday and gave me antibiotics and steroids. Tomorrow is Friday. Finally feeling better but not well yet. This post is a combination a couple weeks while our household was ill. Sorry if it seems a little jumbled.

I Sewed Knits and I like It

I did venture into make a pair of sleep pants for hubby and found out that men need a little more stretch in places and just tracing a pair of old ones doesn't always work. He was so sweet putting them on. I had to ask him to take them off with the promise I would find a pattern for him. So, if you know of any please let me know in the comments. The pants fit me with a little moderation to the elastic, so nothing wasted.

Swap

I participated in a Pouch Swap on Instagram #2016pouchswap if you want to see what everyone create. This is the package I made and put together for my partner. It was really fun to make all those HSTs (half square triangles), a pincushion 3" wide, a coaster (bigger than the pouch), and a 4" pouch out of 1" hsts! The little floral prints are from the "Little House on the Prairie" line. I received them in a Quilty Box. You get some really great items every month like the Petites Threads I also included in my partners box.

If you are interested signup for their newsletter and they give you a code for $10 off your first month. After that quit or stay but I am pretty sure you will get hooked. Quilty Box - Home lots of things I keep for myself some I use in my swaps, but all of it is awesome.

Foundation Paper Piecing - Color Wheel Arrows

Here is what I am working on whenever I feel good enough to get out of bed, for me, a little "Selfish Sewing". It is a pattern by Lily's Quilts: About Me, that I shrank from MAGAZINE Archives - Love Patchwork & Quilting. Issue 30, which you can find in stores here in the United States, about now. One of my favorite online retailers Quilting Magazines - Sewing Magazines | Fat Quarter Shop might have it. It takes it a little longer for it to start selling in the USA after the release in the United Kingdom.

It is 8 1/2", I still have some work. I hope to make a mini quilt for my wall. I guess that is about all for now. It is after 1 am so I need my sleep at least until I am well.
