Wanna Make Your Own

Button, button who's got the button?

Me that's who!

On one of my special projects I needed 3 buttons! Now you have to realize I have hundreds maybe thousands of buttons! In old Mason jars throughout our home. I think they add character to a room. They are great for teaching children how to count.

Once David needed a hundred somethings in a project and I sewed a hundred red buttons to his shirt to wear that day. He went through almost every Mason I had searching for just the right red buttons. It was great fun! I have buttons that belonged to my Great Grandma, she would cut them off the old clothes to warn to be useful and keep them in a jar. Then use them when needed. My Grandma gave me that jar as a young woman and as I found old buttons at flea markets and garage sales I have added to them. I have a few really old Military buttons I keep in my safe after my Mom saw on the Antique Roadshow they might be Civil War.

Let's just say "I have buttons"!

Today I made my first fabric covered buttons and it was Easy!

Dritz makes kits for all kinds of sizes. On the bottom righthand corner tells you what size. I bought 7/8 inch it is the closes I could find to an inch.
I think once made the button is an inch.

Cut a fabric circle twice the size as your button top (it looks like a little dish)
Center the fabric on the white piece
Use the blue pusher to push the center in
Then put you button top in on top of fabric
Fold the fabric into the dish
Put the cap on
The use the blue pusher to press the cap into place
Remove completed button from the white piece
Ta dah you are done!

More than you probably wanted to know
but have you seen the prices on buttons?
More than the $1.97, I paid for the kit at Walmart!

Thank you for stopping by!
Create and be unique!

  1. Lisa, thanks for posting this. I haven't made covered buttons in a while, but it makes me think of a pillow and I want to run in their right now and make one, and pop a pretty little button right in the big middle of it.

  2. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to look for one of those. I remember my mom making covered buttons and it involved a hammer. This looks much easier!

  4. I saw my mother make covered buttons years and years ago. I used to make them for her for her sewing projects. I think it gives you a great sense of accomplishment to make the perfect button for a project and you know it's a button no one else has. The buttons are beautiful.

  5. We share a love of buttons. My mom kept hers in a Folgers can, but I don't drink coffee, so mine are in a gallon jar and other jars.
