Is someone using your blog

Recently I have found out a few things about how others use our blogs and comments to climb higher on the advertising Google ladder.

I will be deleting this post in a few days because I don't want them linking their junk to my blog! So if you are the one doing this and I figure out who you are you will no longer be welcome here!

I never thought about it much because who hasn't entered a Giveaway that was closed already. Or are the bad guys the only ones and me. I am just a little pissed off!

If you go to the "Design" on your blog, after it opens up, you will see "Stats" click on that and open it up, then open "Traffic Sources"

Bad Guy #2 tells you they are doing it

Referer spam is not against the law!
Referer spam also known as log spam or referer bombing. The technique involves making repeated web site requests using a fake referer URL that points to the advertised site. Sites that publicize their access logs, including referer statistics, will then inadvertently link back to the advertised site. These links will be indexed by search engines as they crawl the access logs. Read more about referer spam at Wikipedia.

Then somewhere buried in your blog you might find these Bad Guys hanging around! I have spent my morning trying to figure it out and read all about robot.txt file but if you do it wrong no search engine will pick up you blog. Do not mess with something you don't understand!

How do we remove them? Unfortunately, I don't know! Just makes me mad and I am venting! Sorry to all the great people out there!

I sure hope I don't sound like a fool! Lisa

  4. Interesting, thanks for sharing that. I looked at mine and it seemed like a post I had written a last winter was getting all kinds of traffic - which was out of the ordinary as it was one of my best projects to share. There was a comment from "Unknown" that I had published. I have deleted that particular comment. Not sure if that was the source of my troubles but I will definitely keep an eye on that!

  5. I found a Norwegian site that was harvesting my posts and other sewing/crafty sites for their site's ads. I went in and truncated all of my posts and set my comments to not take anonymous comments. I found out that the robots that harvest your blog posts can't hijack your posts if you truncate it.

  6. Thanks Kim for suggesting truncating. I had read that before, but now I will go back and add it to my posts. I've seen several strange referring sites on my stats.

  7. Hi!!! Sorry this is happening to you...I have had some of this but the only thing I did was change to make it where people had to have an account to make a comment and it seems to have helped...People get paid to do that...it seems like it would be illegal...hope something works out for you...

  8. Ahhh that explains a lot.. now I see why a simple blog that I have with very few posts can get many hits in a day..mind you I haven't updated it in months.

  9. Wow, Lisa. And here we are ready to participate in this blog hop.... Getting things looking good on our blogs. Looks like spring cleaning is not enough. Glad you have shared this with us!

  10. Thanks for sharing that info Lisa. I use a plug-in for Wordpress called Askimet. It has caught over 1,600 of those spammy comments trying to get a connection on my site. I have my preferences set up to accept comments automatically only after the author has been accepted once. I usually end up stopping at least 10 spammy comments per day but they are getting more clever about how they try to post. It's a pity that we have to spend so much time preventing this sort of thing.

Now I'll be on the the look out. :)
