Cartwright Seam Ripper Giveaway

West Virginian Artesian, Greg Cartwright, of Cartwright's Creations.
His items are sold in historical shops throughout West Virginia.
He is a lover of reclaimed wood of historical nature
and creator of works of art!

Dear Readers
I have provided two seam rippers to Lisa
so she can have one and one to give away.
They are both made from beautiful old growth oak which was reclaimed from the original train depot in Weston (Lewis County), West Virginia. Train service was established in Weston around 1880. This wood is representative of a great part of my passion for this venture in woodworking for me – that is finding wood with a story to it. I must admit that my main focus is pens and pencils but it really doesn’t matter what I am making as long as it is from wood (although I have recently added pens made of deer antler).
I truly love woods with a story and encourage you to browse the
Pens Section of Cartwright's Creations to see example of
works created with the different woods.
You will find a list of approximately 60 woods of varying ranges of historical and local significance along with some exotic woods which are in my collection just for their beauty.
I am always looking for special projects! If you have a special piece of wood, I would welcome the opportunity to make seam rippers or pens of various styles for family or friends. If you are interested, send me a picture of your piece of wood and please include a ruler in your picture so I can judge the dimensions of the piece. My contact information is available here

ReplyDeleteI love the history in the wood! The train depot wood sounds pretty cool. There are a few old train stations from industrial revolution era around where I live, it's really interesting to try to imagine all the different people who would have used those stations.

What a giveaway!!! Without a doubt, I would choose WORMY CHESTNUT RAIL FROM A FARM FENCE AT FENWICK MOUNTAIN. I am romantic and having the seam ripper from a piece of Chestnut would take me back to a time when there were real chestnut trees growing in the US.

ReplyDeleteI'm fortunate to own one of these - I want everyone to know this is the sharpest seam ripper that I own. AND I was hesitant to tell Greg that I had lost the cap to my seam ripper. He kindly suggested that I pull out my seam ripper, turn it around, insert it back in the barrel of the ripper, and guess what? There was my cap - no more lost cap to my seam ripper. This is also the only seam ripper I own that has the cap with it. Mine is made from wood from land across from the one-room elementary school I attended (and it belonged to my sister-in-law's father). Neat, eh?

ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed reading this story and lookig up different woods! I would love a seam ripper in WV Yellow Poplar from the farm in Cabell county. My parents were farmers and we had many poplar trees growing as wind breaks for the sheep....in the state of South Australia. I love the soft honey colour of the wood. Thankyou for the chance.

Well I really wish I still had the wood that my Grandfather picked up after a train de-railed, he picked up some beautiful cherry and walnut woods, I used a lot of it to make my brother a built-in TV Cabinet, but when I moved to Greece I gave it all away, but that would have been a beautiful story.

ReplyDeleteWould love a seam ripper made from Barbour County Mahogany from the Gibson guitar blank. My dear husband plays guitar while I sew. So I though it would apropos. I was tempted though to pick a wood from a United Methodist Church in that maybe it would help me from swearing when I use a seam ripper. I don't think that's possible, so maybe I can just hum louder with the mahogany seam ripper and keep the swearing jar empty!
