Dare to Dresden

Dare to Dresden Blog Hop

Welcome to "In The Boon Docks", I am Lisa and I am forever creating something! You never know what you might find when you stop in here. Today is Day 3 of the Dare to Dresden blog hop sponsored by Madam Samm @ Sew We Quilt and Cheerleader Christine @ Quilt Monster In My Closet Thank you both for your excellent advice and giving us all a place to showcase our work!

I have lived off-line since January 10th due to the living in KY with my daughter and her fiancé waiting for the arrival of my granddaughter. I then stayed to help my daughter for the last week. I arrived home today around 6 pm. I had my sewing machine and a few thing but I didn't have my dresden ruler so my first attempt at making my own I went a little wrong. So I chopped off the triangle point and started again.

These cutting mats (3 in a pack) are cheap and great for making templates! You might want to pick up a pack next time you go to Walmart!

See this is how they look when you fold them right sides together and sew the top! It doesn't work if you cut them into that shape when you start.

Sew them side by side right sides together!

I picked up 5 yards of teal decor weight fabric in a shop in KY (no other info available, just rolled up with a price tag) to use as background fabric. The dresden plates fabrics are Metro, Half Moon Modern, by Moda and Type, by Julia Rothman, Windham Fabrics.

Now for the giveaway!

This truly fantastic teal pouch with a red zipper and 2 dresden plates on the front, which will finish at 12 1/2" h. x 15" w., it is lined in the same teal fabric, with a boxed bottom. I hope you like it! It would make a great travel bag!

This giveaway is open to everyone, just like this blog so no matter where you reside you can enter and I will mail it to the winner. If you are a no-reply blogger please leave an e-mail address in your comment. If I cannot contact you - you cannot win!

To win

1. Leave a comment telling me (yes or no) if you have ever sewn a zipper into something and what it was?

The reason is I am curious. I have quilted for 6 years now and never sewed a zipper or a pouch until this month. It makes a nice gift and it really not that hard. But me I was scared to death to try one. I could make all kind of purses but if it had a zipper, I wouldn't even think of making one! Now, I love making pouches.

2. If you are a follower you get an extra comment entry because you earned it this month. If you are a new follower please write - "new follower" in your comment.

This giveaway will close on February 3, 2013 at midnight and a winner will be chosen randomly on February 4, 2013. It will be announced on this blog and the winner will be notified by e-mail.

Thank you for stopping by today, hope you come back again soon. Now hop on over and visit the other bloggers scheduled for today! There is plenty of inspiration and more giveaways! Lisa

  1. What a darling pouch, I would love to win it. I also dread putting in zippers but I do recall putting one in a dress for one of my nieces...not the best job but not the worst...I'm not confident enough to try pouches although I am itching to give it a go!

    ReplyDelete
  2. I'm a follower! Thanks for the second chance!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Great Post! and I Love your Dresdens!! Good Tip too about the cutting mats, will have to remember that next time I am there! Thanks. Hugs and Happy Hopping!!

  4. Great post. I have.. maternity pants I made for myself when I was pregnant w/ my daughter.. too small for normal maternity clothes and my regular stuff was a little tight so I had to make my own. Zipper turned out ok, after the second pair it wasn't so scary putting them in.

  5. Your pouch is sew cute! I have sewed zippers into projects many times ... from clothing to bags packets to pouches and it is easy, but I always feel a little intimidated when I see "zipper" in a project ... does not keep me from making, though. Thanks for sharing. Congratulations to you and your family and welcome to the world to your new grand daughter! ... :) Pat

  6. Lovely Dresdens. I've sewn heaps of zips over the years... clothing, pouches.

    ReplyDelete
  7. How sweet a new granddaughter! Love the Dresden pouch! Zippers scared me forever, but gritted my teeth and finally did a pouch too. Seems like I used to do zippers way back when. Thank you for the great giveaway and for sharing. jbechosend at sbcglobal dot net

    ReplyDelete
  10. Great projects there - I think when I very first started sewing I jumped right in and sewed a zip onto an organiser I made so I have never looked back since! Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Lovely dresdens! Thanks for sharing and the chance to win

    ReplyDelete
  12. What fabulous dresdens!
I used to sew a lot of zippers when I made clothes over 20 years ago but somehow I've lost confidence so I'll have to learn again!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Great pouch, I've put zippers on cushion backs before and the odd purse but they still scare me!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lovely Dresdens and pouch - I like the background colour. I've put zips into pouches and cushions but that's all - still find them rather intimidating!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Your pouch is awesome with lovely Dresdens. Thanks for sharing

    ReplyDelete
  16. Darling! I've never sewed a zipper for the same rreason you said. It looks way scary!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lisa-Wow! The dark fabric you used to back your Dresdens really makes the colors pop! Your little pouch is so cute-what size Dresdens did you use to get 2 on a 12inch block? Sewing zippers is not difficult - there are a few "tricks" I used when I taught Home Economics. One is that I used scotch tape to get my stitching straight. If you'd like more, let me know, I'd be happy to oblige. From CA, thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gorgeous work. Thank you for sharing such wonderful eye candy today.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Your Dresden's really pop on that background fabric - Lovely pouch you have offered in your Giveaway-
I have only sewn a zipper once & that was for a tiny pouch - They can be tricky :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love your Dresdens. I have made a bunch of zipper pouches in the last year. My favorite is the wide mouth pouch from Anna at Noodlehead. Yours is lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I probably sewed in my first zipper 50 years ago. I wanted to learn to sew and took sewing in 4-H. The first thing was an apron, so no zipper. I moved on and before I got to a zipper in 4-H, my mother taught me how to make a dress. I put my first zipper in a school dress. I've been putting them in ever since.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like your hint for template "material." I do have a LQS not very far, yet I have a Wal-mart much closer and it's open 24/7. Thanks for the hint.

I like your Dresdens. I also like the fabrics you used in them. I particularly liked the paper clips. Thank you for being so generous with your giveaway. I'm a new follower.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Love your dresden pouch! I want to make some of the wide mouthed ones myself. I love putting zippers in!

  28. Your Dresden plate blocks are so pretty!

    I am already a follower!

    ReplyDelete
  29. very lovely!! I have sewn one zipper in a pair of slacks. It didn't go too bad; as far as the zipper goes! I cut a hole in the slacks with the seam ripper....lol

    ReplyDelete
  30. Great fabric choices! Nice job! How is the new grandbaby?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Pretty little dresdens. I have sewn many zippers and I even have a FREE tutorial on Craftsy on how to sew a zipper in a bag. There are of course dozens of ways to sew zippers, so you just need to find one or 2 methods that you like to use. Since I make so many bags myself I do not need to win your bag, so if you choose me, please go ahead and give it to someone else. The bag is lovely, but I would rather it go to someone else who can use it as I am a "bag lady" already, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Lisa. I use to make clothes for me and my daughter so I have put in lots of zippers. Not hard really. But for some reason, the thought of putting one in a pouch or bag scares me. I would love to make some bags, but I keep thinking about that zipper! Thanks for sharing and for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  72. Congrats on the new grandchild. Yes, I have done a zipper or two in my lifetime, most recently for a Carol's convertible purse that had both an interior hidden pocket and a exterior one as well. I think it is easier now with the non metal teeth versions than that we used to use in garment sewing!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Nope, never have! Got a whole pile of them from ZipIt, so I'm ready when I get the nerve!

  74. Back when I was in junior high/middle school, girls (only) were required to take home economics where we learned to cook, clean, sew, and put on lipstick before our man got home. I had to put a zipper into a skirt, the only time I've done it (I got a B-, so obviously I didn't do it very well!) It is on my to-do list for this year to make zipper pouches, but I keep putting it off because I'm afraid of doing as badly as I did the first time, lol

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yes, I have sew in a zipper. I made the Professional Tote bag it it had 3 zippers that I had to put in. I too shy away from putting in zippers, put the instructions were great, and now I just add zipper for the fun of it. I love what you are doing with your Dresdens.

    ReplyDelete

  86. Zippers.. ughhhh - I have put many in - but I hate to do them. Always afraid I will get puckers too much so now I usually put them in by hand. The last time I did one was in a hunting outfit for a friend.

    ReplyDelete
  87. My first sewing project required a zipper. I was 12, and thus began my love/hate relationship with zippers! But I've gotten pretty good at them now, I've had 15 years of practice. :)

I was a sewer (that doesn't look like a good word, does it?) long before I learned to quilt. With good directions and a spiffy zipper foot, I've never had any zipper trauma myself. Thanks so much for hopping with me today!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Thank you for your tutorial on the pointy topped dresdens. Yes, I've put in a zipper before and it was for an overnight shaving type bag for my college son.

  100. I love the idea of using cutting boards for templates! Thanks for sharing your dresden, so pretty :)

    ReplyDelete
  101. Thanks for the template tip. That teal fabric is gorgeous.I just finished a project with a zipper. I made a circle pouch for my earbuds. The zipper was easy, the circle not so much. I have made pants with zippers. The zipper was not the hard part. Zippers get a bad rap!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Yes, I have sewn a zipper before. The first time was back (WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY back) in high school home ec class. It was a horrible experience and I think it may have scarred me for life because I am terribly afraid to touch them. That zipper was put into a shift dress I had to make from a pattern which I made for my mother. Thinking back, that was the worst dress ever when I finished but my Mom still wore it with pride, crooked zipper and all. LOL

Since then I have done all I can to avoid zippers but did do one during a class at the Viking store when learning to use my new machine. It was super easy, but I still have that fear of them. I need to be smacked I think. LOL

Those cutting mats are a great idea. Thank you for that because I never would have thought to use them.

  114. Yes, I have "tried" to sew in a zipper. It's something I keep telling myself I really need to practice. I had knit my new grand-daughter (congrats on yours) a bunting made from a vintage pattern and it required a zipper. Lets just say it at least did the job! Thanks for the tip on the mats! I've not seen those before, I'm going to have to look for them as they do look handy! Love your Dresden too!
